Tell us a bit about yourselfMy name is...

Q&A - Pragya Kothari

Tell us a bit about yourself

My name is Pragya and I’m an illustrator and licensing artist.

Originally from north India, I now call United States my home. I live here with my husband and one very naughty but adorable bunny.

Early 2009 I found my ‘voice’ as an illustrator and soon realized I could make a living doing what I love. In addition to selling my work online and in various stores around the country I also license. It’s very fulfilling personally.

How do you go about creating your pieces?

Fascinated with the world around me, I use my favorite animate and inanimate ‘things’ as a means to tell a story. I’m a lover of bright saturated colors and use them to add humor, beauty and playfulness to the ordinary.

Mostly I have a clear idea of what I want before I begin. During the process of drawing new ideas sometimes come out too. I primarily use Adobe Illustrator to draw.

What single element, person, object or real life situation, do you think has influenced you the most throughout your artist career?

Life as a collection and interaction of real and imaginary things is a cornucopia of inspiration.

What is your best piece of art to date?

My favorites are constantly changing. Currently I’m in love with all my floral pieces. No matter what is happening outside, inside the four walls, it is always spring.

5.Any current projects/shows/releases you want to advertise?

I recently completed a project that is really close to my heart. It is a fusion of two of my favorite things. Wild animals and Rajasthani turbans. Its called Royal Safari and will be available for purchase soon on pragyak.etsy.com.

Tell us a bit about yourselfI’m...

Q&A - Rachel Adams

Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m Rachel Adams, I live and work from my home studio in Colchester, Essex. Not too long ago I decided to take a risk and retrain. Leaving a secure job in education, I enrolled on an Art and Design Degree course at my local college, where began a creative journey that was to change my life forever.

How do you go about creating your pieces?

I use Adobe Creative Suite to produce most of my designs, although many of them start in a sketchbook as simple line drawings. I am a huge fan of using block colour, and take pleasure in working with bright, bold tints and hues.

What single element, person, object or real life situation, do you think has influenced you the most throughout your artist career?

Raising twin boys alone from my early twenties meant my own dreams and goals were temporarily put on hold. However, the trials and tribulations have been the main driving force behind my desire to be creative.
Being solely responsible for the welfare of others has taught me to be imaginative in my approach to life and the challenges it presents. As a result I have developed a good eye for colour, detail and form and take pleasure in thinking creatively and enjoy solving problems.
Consequently, art and design found me…or at least, I found a new and exciting confidence in my creativity, learnt through my own eventful experiences.

What is your best piece of art to date?

This artistic path is still new for me and choosing a favourite step so early would be tough. I would love to think the best is yet to come. My best piece of work to date is my children, the time and effort they demand is returned tenfold.

Rachel’s print is available here.

www.racheladamsdesigns.com

Graffiti artist Tilt has just completed this eye-popping interior design work for the Au Vieux Panier hotel in Marseille, France. The hotel has just five rooms that are annually reconceptualized by commissioned artists and designers. For this space entitled Panic Room Tilt divided the room perfectly down the middle, one half covered entirely in his trademark vibrant and bubbly graffiti and the other half left stark white.

Tell us a bit about yourselfI’m...

Q&A - Darnyill

Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m Darnyill (or Daniel Rautenbach) I’m 19 and from Cape Town, South Africa. I’m currently studying at the University of Cape Town (UCT) majoring in Art History and Mathenatics. Since I was a child I was drawing on anything and everything. I believe my love for Design comes from the combination of Art with a certain Mathematical element to it. I became interested in Graphic Design when I was about 17 and after school I took a gap year in South America where I did a 6 month internship with an agency in Buenos Aires. At the moment I’m just doing some freelance for various clients, but I’m hoping to return to Buenos Aires after UCT and study Illustration and Typography at the University of Buenos Aires.

How do you go about creating your pieces?

Sometimes I’ll get an idea and know exactly what I want to do and I’ll just do it straight on the computer with the method all thought out (using Adobe Illustrator), but that doesn’t happen often and is usually just for those personal experimentation pieces. I usually try to sketch things out and then redraw them out on Illustrator, but not having a tablet is proving rather tricky. I try to keep a balance of spontaneity and structure with my work and I’m learning more and more everyday.

What single element, person, object or real life situation, do you think has influenced you the most throughout your artist career?

The thing that influences me the most to this day is the past me. As in, when I was a child. My imagination was just this factory churning out the most bizarre and fantastical ideas and I like to bring out my inner-child when I draw. The naivety and innocence it has is pleasing.

What is your best piece of art to date?

It’s very difficult to say. Each piece is good in its own way. But I guess the most significant piece so far was a 1.8x2m illustration I did when I was 17 (just as I got interested in Illustration and Design). You can see it here I went through a patch (a couple of years) of hating anything creative I made and so the process of creating this piece basically re-awakened my afore-mentioned love for drawing I had when I was a child. (There’s a longer story here). The drawing now takes up half my bedroom!

Any current projects/shows/releases you want to advertise?

Just my facebook page - Darnyill, or my tumblr filled with bizarre inspiration and my designs!

Darnyill’s print is available here.

Q&A - Sean Ngan

Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m Sean Ngan, a Malaysian Chinese Graphic Design student studying at the University for the Creative Arts in Epsom. I’ve always had an interest in Graphic design and I’m looking to enter the industry as a designer or illustrator after my graduation. As well as my studies at university I enjoy doing freelance work for various clients. I’m just a simple and nice guy with a genuine interest in what I do.

How do you go about creating your pieces?

I view Graphic Design as a second language with which I can communicate with others. As inspiration I found myself thinking of childhood memories, which filled my mind with many pictures and images. With this in mind I wanted to draw out these images in order to share them with others, this resulted in the creation of my work. The materials used are simple but effective, firstly drawing out the image using pens and markers. After this, I transfer the drawing into Photoshop to make any needed changes before adding the final touches.

What single element, person, object or real life situation, do you think has influenced you the most throughout your artist career?

As a student, I am constantly learning about different styles and artists, which I can use to my advantage within my work. Adrian Johnson is one of my favourite artists although if I had to pick one person to be my idol it would have to be Stefan Sagmeister. Stefan Sagmeister is a very influential Graphic Designer who inspires me further to create my work. Throughout my experiences so far I can’t say who has influences me the most, but I believe that I take everything I experience to create work which is true to myself.

What is your best piece of art to date?

In all honesty I like most of the art I create because they all have different stories to tell. However, if I had to say which piece I am most proud of? I would say ‘Childhood’ which is the print I have created for Unknownprints. This is my favourite because of its originality and my strong unique style, which is a feature of this piece. Another piece I would like to mention is work I have created for a competition brief for the company PaperCo in unison with my classmate Kirsty Wells. This particular piece managed to win the competition’s golden award. In short, the brief was to create a simple piece of direct mail in order to promote the PaperCo company and their merchandise. My colleague and I created a three dimensional tree shaped catalogue of the company’s paper stock, which could also be used as a notepad and promoted unique selling points of the company.

Any current projects/shows/releases you want to advertise?

This is my first piece of artwork, which has been published for the public to purchase. I am keen to continue creating work as a freelancer or working for a company whenever I meet the right person to work with. I really enjoy creating work whether it is for my personal use or as a commissioned piece. If you are interested in my work, simply email me at seanngan@hotmail.com and I will be more than happy to answer your questions or share some more work.

Sean’s prints are available here.

Tell us a bit about yourself

Ross Martin, im from Bristol but grown up in the Middle East (Bahrain & Dubai) my whole life. I got into photography just over 3 years ago from what was a hobby and within a few months shortly after i started taking it to a professional level working with high end fashion and commercial photographers.

How do you go about creating your pieces?

Seeing as i have grown up in the Middle East mostly my whole life a lot of my influences come from the surroundings around me. The two pieces i submitted to you are photos that i took from what i have grown up being around, sand dunes from road trips, camping and passing them on a daily bases to get around places.

What single element, person, object or real life situation, do you think has influenced you the most throughout your artist career?

There are two people that have influence me through my career of Photography and that is the two people i have worked alongside with since the start.
Ali Sharaf - http://www.alisharaf.com/ & Jacqueline Kent - http://www.jacquelinekentphotography.com

What is your best piece of art to date?

To date some of my best work, i can’t really pin point pictures out. As i say, i’m only as good as my last photo and that is some advertising photos i have been doing.

Any current projects/shows/releases you want to advertise?

Currently i am just doing some college assignments which are fashion & advertising. I have a few pictures displayed on my facebook page - http://www.facebook.com/RossM.Photography
